Rental E-Scooter Trials Zoom In This July
Get ready to zip around! New rules launching on Saturday, 4 July 2020, will allow the first ever trials of rental e-scooters across Great Britain. Transport Minister Rachel Maclean has given the green light for local councils to run rental schemes as early as next week.
E-Scooters Hit the Streets
Whether you’re commuting or just enjoying the summer sun, e-scooters could soon be a common sight on roads, cycle lanes, and tracks. The trial aims to see if these zippy rides can cut down motor traffic and improve safety for everyone.
But don’t expect to scoot on pavements – that’s strictly off-limits. Speed caps are set at a nippy 15.5mph, and helmets are highly recommended.
Rules Riders Must Follow
- Must be aged 16 or over
- Need a full or provisional car, motorcycle, or moped licence
- Only rental e-scooters allowed – privately owned scooters remain banned on public roads
This is to stop a flood of low-quality, dodgy scooters cluttering the streets.
Minister’s Vision: Green and Clean Travel
“As we emerge from lockdown, we have a unique opportunity in transport to build back in a greener, more sustainable way that could lead to cleaner air and healthier communities across Great Britain,” said Rachel Maclean.
“E-scooters may offer a convenient, clean, and cost-effective way to travel, easing pressure on public transport and helping with social distancing. These trials will show if they live up to the hype.”
What’s Next?
The 12-month trials will be closely watched, with major rental firms working hand-in-hand with local councils. From bustling cities to quiet rural spots, the goal is a smooth, controlled rollout of this new way to get around.
So, buckle up – or rather, helmet up – e-scooter life might be just around the corner!
