Deputy Head Teacher Caught in Dark Web Child Abuse Scandal
Richard Swinnerton, 30, a deputy head at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Middlesbrough, has admitted to watching horrific child sexual abuse videos online. The National Crime Agency (NCA) swooped on his Coulby Newham home on May 15 after uncovering his two-year dark web binge.
Dark Web Horror Uncovered
Swinnerton revealed he used TOR software to hide his sinister activity on the dark web. The footage he watched included adults raping children — shocking and sickening material. His laptop held 87 Category A videos, the most severe illegal child abuse imagery.
He quit his job at St Clare’s following the NCA investigation. Officers stress there is no evidence any abuse took place at the school, nor any physical abuse allegations linked to him.
Guilty Plea and Upcoming Sentencing
Appearing at Teeside Magistrates’ Court, Swinnerton admitted three counts of possession of child sexual abuse images across categories A, B, and C. His sentencing is set for Teeside Crown Court, date pending.
“Swinnerton had gone to considerable lengths using TOR to commit his offences and thought he was anonymous on the dark web,”
— Julie Booker, NCA Operations Manager
Booker added: “Viewers of child sexual abuse images fuel the cycle of trauma and suffering inflicted on victims. Every image shared revictimises a child. Stopping paedophiles remains an NCA top priority.”
School and Charity Respond
A St Clare’s spokesperson said: “This has been an upsetting matter for parents, carers, staff and the wider community. We assure everyone that the wellbeing and safety of our children is always paramount. Importantly, these offences are not connected to his role at the school.”
