UK Residents Snap Rare Northern Lights Spectacle
Skywatchers across the UK have been rushing to capture the Northern Lights tonight. Even more thrilling, the dazzling display is set to return tomorrow evening, Monday 27th, at around 7pm. Spotting the Aurora Borealis this far south in the UK is a rare treat.
Meteorologists Confirm Aurora Sightings
The Met Office confirmed the stunning news: “Where skies are clear, the Aurora Borealis may be visible as far south as central England tonight. The Northern Lights are expected to make another appearance Monday night.”
What Causes the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights, or auroras, are natural light shows usually seen near the Arctic and Antarctic. These spectacular colours appear in patterns like curtains, rays, and spirals across the night sky.
The phenomenon is triggered by disturbances in Earth’s magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These disruptions intensify when solar wind speeds rise thanks to coronal holes and coronal mass ejections from the sun. Charged particles then dance through the magnetosphere, lighting up the skies with breathtaking colours.
