Nursery Worker Jailed for Smearing Food Waste on Toddler’s Face
A nursery worker in Mansfield has been sentenced to five months in prison after caught on CCTV smearing food waste into the face of a toddler with additional needs. Helen Walker, 49, committed the shocking act on 24 February 2023 and then tried to cover her tracks.
CCTV Captures Abuse and Failed Cover-Up
The distressing footage shows Walker scooping leftover food scraps and pushing them into the child’s face as he cries in distress. Rather than showing remorse, Walker ignored the child and later attempted to shift blame by accusing another child of stealing the food. This desperate cover-up was also caught on CCTV.
Police and Nursery Staff Respond

Investigator Jacqui Edwards blasted Walker for betraying the trust placed in nursery staff, especially given the victim’s additional needs. She said:
“Nursery staff are placed in the ultimate position of trust to care for young children. Walker betrayed that trust with these appalling actions… She then tried to portray the child as a troublemaker in an attempt to conceal what she had done.”
Edwards praised the child’s parents for their cooperation and reassured them of ongoing support. She also commended the nursery staff and management for their swift action in reporting Walker’s conduct and assisting with the investigation.
Thorough Police Inquiry Leads to Jail
Edwards underlined the importance of child safeguarding, adding that specialist officers carried out a thorough investigation which led to Walker’s conviction and sentencing.
The case serves as a stark warning to childcare workers that abuse and cover-ups will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
