Cop Charged with Historic Sexual Assaults in Croydon
PC Anthony Rowley, 51, from the South Area Command, faces four charges of sexual assault against a girl under 14. He is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 27 March.
Allegations Date Back to Late 1980s
The alleged offences involve a single victim known to Rowley and reportedly took place in Croydon between 1988 and 1989. The claims were only brought to light decades later, with the victim reporting them to police on 27 May 2023.
Rowley was arrested on 1 June 2023 and released on bail. He was formally charged on 27 February 2024.
Police Probe and Suspension Underway
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is leading a misconduct investigation parallel to the criminal case. PC Rowley has been suspended from duty pending the outcome.
Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, Croydon Policing Lead, said: “I understand the serious concern this news will cause locally. Officers took swift action after the allegations surfaced, and investigations continue. It would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this stage as we must protect the integrity of court proceedings.”
