Crackdown on Dangerous Drivers Using Phones Behind the Wheel
From Monday 27 February to Sunday 12 March, Roads Policing Unit officers are backing a National Police Chiefs’ Council campaign targeting reckless drivers caught texting and calling while driving.
Phone Use: One of the Deadly ‘Fatal Four’
Using a mobile phone on the road ranks as one of the notorious ‘fatal four’ offences. Alongside speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, phone distractions cause countless serious crashes and fatalities every year.
Roadside Checks Get Tough: Eyesight Tests on the Spot
Watch out for marked and unmarked police cars carrying out surprise roadside eyesight tests. Any driver unable to read a number plate from 20 metres in daylight could be breaking the law.
Failing the eyesight test can see your licence swiftly revoked by the DVLA, and you won’t get it back until you prove your vision meets legal standards.
Chief Inspector Issues Stern Warning to Drivers
“It’s vital that motorists put safety first. It’s more than just a penalty – you could seriously injure or kill someone by checking that text or getting behind the wheel with poor vision,” said Chief Inspector Craig West, Head of the Roads Policing Unit.
“Officers will use intelligence-led tactics to catch and punish lawbreakers. The message is clear – don’t do it, and don’t let others take the risk either.”
