Life for Murderer Toby Kelly After Killing Ambulance Worker Sheldon Flanighan
Murderer Sentenced to Life Over Tragic Crash
Toby Kelly has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 28 years in jail for the fatal murder of Sheldon Flanighan, a devoted ambulance worker. The Newcastle Crown Court also sentenced Kelly to 13 years and 149 days for the attempted murder of Sheldon’s friend, Wayne Common, to run concurrently. Kelly will also face a three-year driving ban after his release.
Deadly Crash Outside Local Pub
The court heard chilling details of how Kelly deliberately rammed his van into Sheldon and Wayne outside a pub on April 1. Sheldon, 55, suffered catastrophic injuries and tragically died despite emergency crews’ efforts. Wayne survived but with serious long-term injuries.
Callous Killer Caught on Camera Laughing
During the trial, jurors saw bodycam footage showing Kelly laughing and making jokes moments after hearing of Sheldon’s death — a brutal display of his cold-hearted nature.
Family Devastated as Community Mourns
Sheldon’s family described him as a caring, loving man who lit up the lives of everyone he knew. A proud father, Sheldon cherished his bond with his sons and looked forward to retirement after 29 years with the North East Ambulance Service — dreams cruelly shattered by Kelly’s actions.
The funeral attracted thousands in Sheldon’s hometown of Amble. The ambulance service honoured him with a Guard of Honour, reflecting the deep respect held for the man dedicated to saving lives.
“Sheldon brought light, care, and laughter into our lives. The pain of losing him is unbearable. Our hearts remain heavy, but his memory will live on forever,” said the family.
As they navigate their grief, Sheldon’s loved ones thanked the community for their overwhelming support and vowed that his spirit will never be forgotten.
