Drug Dealer Ryan Wellman Jailed for Assaulting Emergency Workers
Ryan Wellman, 24, homeless and from Penzance, has been locked up for three years and nine months after viciously attacking police officers while in custody. The sentence was handed down at Plymouth Crown Court following his guilty plea on drug and assault charges.
Violent Outburst After Crash in Glynn Valley
The explosive incident unfolded on October 26 after a crash in the Glynn Valley, between Liskeard and Bodmin. Wellman was being taken to Derriford Hospital by a Police Constable and a Special Constable when the chaos erupted.
Doctors found Wellman carrying Class A drugs worth around £3,000. When officers attempted to search him, he flew into a violent rage.
Brutal Assault on Police at Hospital
- Wellman punched a male officer and trapped him in a deadly chokehold with his legs.
- The officer nearly lost consciousness, struggling to breathe.
- A female Special Constable trying to help was kicked hard in the chest.
- Hospital staff had to intervene to break the chokehold and detain Wellman.
Justice Served — Jail Time and Serious Sentences
Wellman admitted possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply, earning three years behind bars. An additional nine months was added for the savage assaults on emergency workers.
Detective Constable Tom Parr said: “Our officers showed great professionalism trying to aid Wellman and get him to hospital. But violence like this is never acceptable — police do a tough job but should never face assault.”
“The court’s sentence sends a powerful message: attacks on emergency workers will not be tolerated and will be punished severely.”
The case sends a stark warning about the hefty price to pay for drug crimes and attacking those who keep us safe.
