Man Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Horrific Mosque Attacks
Mohammed Abbkr, 28, from Birmingham’s Edgbaston, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after allegedly dousing victims in a flammable substance and setting them ablaze.
Born in Sudan, Abbkr appeared in court and was remanded in custody, with his next hearing scheduled for April 20.
Victims Left Severely Burned in Brazen Attacks
- On February 27, 82-year-old Hashi Odowa was set on fire outside a mosque in Ealing, West London. He suffered severe burns to his face and arms and was rushed to hospital. Mosque members described the attack as “abhorrent and malicious.”
- On Monday, 70-year-old Mohammed Rayaz was similarly assaulted near his home in Edgbaston. His jacket was set on fire after being sprayed with a flammable liquid. He remains hospitalised in serious but stable condition following a skin graft procedure.
Community Outraged as Ramadan Begins
These attacks have sparked nationwide condemnation. The Muslim community feels shaken and targeted during the holy month of Ramadan. A spokesperson from West London Islamic Centre said, “As we begin the blessed month of Ramadan, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Police Appeal for Help to Catch Attacker
Police are urging anyone with CCTV or video footage related to the incidents to come forward. Detectives from West Midlands and the Metropolitan Police forces are working closely on the investigation.
