Tragic Crash on A56: Woman Dies After Mercedes Ploughs Into Toyota
A horror smash on the A56 Accrington Easterly Bypass ended in tragedy just before 8pm on Thursday, October 13th. A Toyota CH-R, heading north, was slammed from behind by a Mercedes C220 near the J8 roundabout.
Toyota Flipped, Woman Seriously Injured
Both cars careered off the road, coming to rest on the grass with the Toyota landing upside down. The passenger in the Toyota, a woman in her 30s from Nelson, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. Sadly, she later died.
The Toyota driver, a man in his 40s from Nelson, escaped with minor injuries. The Mercedes driver, a man in his 50s from Manchester, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving causing serious injury. He has now been released under investigation.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Sgt Craig Booth of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Sadly, a woman has died as a result of this collision and our thoughts are with her family at this very distressing time. A man has since been arrested but enquiries are very much ongoing. I would appeal for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch with us.”
