York Man Jailed for Racist Gestures at Leeds United Match
David Ellis, 39, from Pottery Lane, York, has been sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for racially aggravated public order offences. The Leeds United fan was sentenced at Leeds Magistrates Court on April 6.
Racist Gestures Caught on Camera
Ellis pleaded guilty to making racially offensive gestures during the Leeds United vs Aston Villa game at Elland Road on October 2, 2022. His actions were filmed by fellow fans and quickly shared on social media, where West Yorkshire Police spotted the footage.
Swift Police Action Leads to Conviction
An investigation was launched, which identified Ellis as the culprit. Detective Sergeant Rob Kennerley from Leeds Police praised the swift work of officers in tackling the hate crime.
“We welcome the sentencing of Ellis for his abhorrent behaviour and hope it sends a strong message that racism will not be tolerated at football matches or in any other walks of life,” Kennerley said.
“We take reports of hate crime seriously, support victims, and take positive action against offenders.”
“Other fans rightly called out this unacceptable behaviour and are prepared to challenge it.”
Police Urge Fans to Report Hate Crime
Kennerley added that West Yorkshire Police are working closely with Leeds United to combat racism in football. He urged anyone facing racist abuse to come forward so action can be taken and offenders held accountable.
