£28K Boost for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sport and Wellbeing

People across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are getting active thanks to a £28,000 cash injection from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation’s (HIWCF) Hampshire Playing Fields Fund. Local groups have been handed grants ranging from £500 to £2,500 to get communities moving.

Grants for All Ages and Abilities

The Hampshire Playing Fields Fund targets those who find it tough to take part in physical activity. From walking and yoga to football and yachting, 12 projects across the region have received support. The objective? To get everyone involved, regardless of age or background.

Nordic Walking for Older Adults

Rushmoor Healthy Living bagged £2,500 to run weekly Nordic walking sessions for older adults and those with health issues. Using special poles, this activity is designed to help participants explore local green spaces they might not otherwise visit.

Jim Ruddy, CEO of Rushmoor Healthy Living, said:

“We’re thrilled to add something new to our exercise schedule. Nordic walking offers fantastic benefits, especially for those with mobility issues or recovering from illness. It also opens up green spaces many people didn’t realise were on their doorstep.”

Football Drop-ins for Youngsters

Winchester Street Reach received £2,150 to run inclusive Friday night football sessions for local youth at a Micheldever school. The project covers pitch fees and gives youngsters from low-income families the chance to enjoy sport without barriers.

Stella Bowling, Project Administrator, said:

“This football drop-in welcomes both girls and boys. No special kit needed. It offers young people a fun, low-cost way to stay active and supports mental health, cutting isolation.”

Wheelchair Rugby for Disabled Athletes

Team Solent Sharks, Hampshire’s only wheelchair rugby club, opened its doors to anyone aged 12+ with physical disabilities. From Paralympic leagues to new formats, the Sharks offer training and competition for all abilities.

Vincent Barton, Team Solent Sharks:

“Whether you have a missing foot or cerebral palsy, you’ll be welcomed by the Sharks. You can join for fun, fitness, or competition. Big thanks to HIWCF for making this possible.”

Accessible Fitness Classes in Portsmouth

Spark Community Space used £2,500 to run accessible classes like yoga, mindfulness, and funky fitness on a ‘pay what you can’ basis. This helps those facing long-term illness, job loss, or skill gaps to improve health and wellbeing.

Rebecca Simmons, Spark Community Space:

“This funding helps people feel great and puts a spark back into their lives. Huge thanks to HIWCF for their incredible support.”

HIWCF CEO Praises Community Efforts

Jacqui Scott, CEO of HIWCF, said:

“I’m humbled by the passion in our communities. These grants highlight the amazing diversity of work happening across the region. Group physical activity boosts mental and physical health and strengthens community bonds. Thanks to the volunteers, staff, funders, and donors who make this possible.”
