Criminal Probe Clears Cop – But Misconduct Panel Says Otherwise
Despite an independent police investigation closing the case due to lack of evidence, Avon and Somerset Police launched their own misconduct inquiry. This week’s hearing concluded Summerill’s actions amounted to gross misconduct. The panel slammed him for abusing his authority and breaching professional standards of respect and courtesy.
Worse still, Summerill reportedly discussed details of the incident and ongoing investigations with colleagues, betraying the victim’s privacy.
Police Professional Standards Chief Slams “Reprehensible” Behaviour
“This officer has committed a shocking and reprehensible act,” said Supt Mark Edgington, head of Professional Standards. “Though criminal charges were dropped, he is utterly unfit to serve and will be banned from policing for life.”
Edgington vowed to root out predatory behaviour within the ranks, stressing the force’s commitment to integrity and accountability.
