Detective Constable Jailed for 26 Years Over Shocking Child Sex Crimes
Detective Constable Stephen Hardy of Greater Manchester Police has been slammed with a 26-year prison sentence for horrifying child rape and sexual assault offences. The chilling sentence was handed down by Judge Robert Trevor-Jones at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday.
‘Puppet and Sex Object’: Judge Condemns Hardy’s Cruel Abuse
During the trial, the court heard how Hardy treated his teenage victim like a “puppet or sex object,” said Judge Trevor-Jones. The 46-year-old officer was convicted of 20 offences, including six counts of rape. The judge blasted Hardy’s complete lack of remorse and described his grooming tactics as calculated and cynical.
“Hardy displayed a devious personality with a sinister streak,” the judge added. His role as a long-serving police officer made the crimes even darker, highlighting a betrayal of trust. The judge acknowledged the lasting trauma caused to victims of sexual abuse, which Hardy callously ignored.
Victim’s Courage and Prosecutor’s Words: A Dark Picture of Manipulation
The victim bravely attended the sentencing, showing immense courage. Prosecutor Vanessa Thomson described Hardy as “a controlling and manipulative man,” while the victim’s statement revealed the deep mental scars and ongoing fear caused by the abuse.
Despite overwhelming evidence, Hardy denied all charges throughout. His lawyer, Laura Nash, warned of the difficulty Hardy will face serving time, especially given his former police status. Even at sentencing, a supporter expressed emotional support for Hardy, underscoring the intense human drama behind the trial.
GMP Acts Swiftly: Disciplinary Actions and Zero Pay for Hardy
Hardy was immediately suspended in July following his conviction. Greater Manchester Police declared he will face disciplinary proceedings and will receive no pay while the case moves forward. Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, head of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, stressed the need to hold Hardy accountable through legal and professional channels.
GMP has vowed to uphold public trust by ensuring officers who abuse their power face harsh penalties. The force is determined to send a clear message: vile crimes by those meant to protect will not be tolerated.
