Prison officer admits assault after brutal attack on inmate at HMP Thameside

Officer Kicks Inmate in Self-Defence – But Went Too Far

Isa Bangura, 34, a prison officer at HMP Thameside, pleaded guilty to assault after kicking an inmate twice in the head during a violent scuffle on December 4, 2020. The inmate, Emmanuel Nyeko, was delivering dinner when he unexpectedly punched Bangura, causing the officer to bleed from the mouth.

Bangura responded with punches before other officers stepped in to restrain Nyeko. However, during the struggle, Bangura landed two forceful kicks to Nyeko’s head, causing a painful wound.

Shock Claims of Fear and Stress Behind Violent Outburst

Bangura told woolwich-crown-court/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Woolwich Crown Court he truly believed Nyeko had a weapon and acted in self-defence — albeit excessively. He expressed deep remorse, admitting he “did not recognise” himself during the 30-second ordeal and wished he could apologise to Nyeko.

His barrister revealed Bangura was under intense personal pressure. Despite feeling overwhelmed, he was refused time off work for fear of losing his job—already hanging by a thread due to a final warning.

Adding to the stress, Bangura had been attacked by another prisoner days prior, and a threatening former inmate had recently been readmitted to the prison, stoking fears for his safety.

Fallout: Career Ruined and Life Turned Upside Down

  • Bangura lost his job as a prison officer
  • Failed employment checks at Transport for London because of his conviction
  • Sentenced to a 12-month community order
  • Ordered to complete 10 days of rehab and serve an eight-week curfew

Judge Haythorne handed down the sentence, taking into account Bangura’s personal struggles and the impact the incident has had on his life.

This case highlights the intense pressure prison officers face and the devastating fallout when things boil over behind bars.
