RAC Warns Partygoers: Don’t Risk Driving the Morning After Christmas Booze

As the UK gears up for Christmas party season, the RAC is sounding the alarm. New research reveals 8% of 25-44-year-olds believe they’ve driven over the legal alcohol limit the day after a night out — double the rate of all drivers combined (4%).

Young Drivers More Likely to Hit the Road Drunk

The RAC’s latest Report on Motoring, surveying over 3,000 drivers, highlights worrying trends among the 25-to-44 age group. Five percent admit to driving with illegal alcohol levels shortly after drinking, and 3% openly confess to driving drunk — higher than the 3% and 2% rates for all drivers.

Overall, 7% of all drivers think they’ve driven when over the limit, up from 5% last year but still well below pre-pandemic highs of 13-14% in 2018-2019.

Support Grows for Tougher Drink-Driving Measures

  • 54% of drivers back more roadside breathalyser tests
  • 43% want alcolocks installed on offenders’ vehicles, which prevent cars starting if alcohol is detected
  • 32% believe alcolocks should be fitted on all vehicles
  • 27% think all drivers should carry breathalysers, rising to 39% among under-25s

Despite less concern about drink-driving nowadays — down from 28% naming it a top worry in 2019 to just 14% now — the RAC insists caution is vital during the festive season.

RAC Spokesman Simon Williams Issues Stark Warning

“It is very concerning to see so many drivers aged 25-44 who think they have driven while drunk, nearly double the figure for all drivers. This has risen to 18% from 9% in 2021 — the highest since before the pandemic. “Seven percent of all drivers admit to driving over the limit either just after drinking or the next morning. This rise may reflect fewer Covid restrictions last year. “However, these numbers remain well below pre-pandemic levels where 16-20% admitted drink-driving. “We urge everyone to make the right call this Christmas, especially the day after the night before. A few hours’ sleep won’t clear your system if you’ve been drinking heavily. “Look out for your mates — help prevent drink-driving and save lives. It’s far better to be safe than sorry.”

The RAC delivers a blunt festive reminder: don’t risk your life or others’ by driving with a hangover. Party hard but play it safe!
