Reckless Driver Jailed for Killing Chatham Biker
A young motorcyclist was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash in Chatham earlier this year. Ismael Martinan-Brittain, 19, died instantly after being struck by a Ford Focus on Princes Avenue.
Hit-and-Run Driver Flees Scene
James William Dye, 22, from Gillingham, swerved into the path of Ismael’s bike after driving dangerously behind a BMW. When the BMW eased to let Ismael join the traffic, Dye recklessly overtook on the wrong side and smashed into the motorcyclist.
Instead of helping, Dye jumped out and fled, ditching his clothes and car keys in a nearby alley to cover his tracks. A car passenger was questioned but not charged. Dye later pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.
Justice Served at Maidstone Crown Court
On Friday, 4 May 2018, Dye was handed a three-year prison sentence. Investigating officer PC Mick Sayer condemned Dye’s “selfish” and dangerous driving, highlighting he was at the wheel without a licence or insurance.
“James Dye’s reckless actions tragically caused the death of a young man,” said PC Sayer. “That selfish decision will forever live with the family of Mr Martinan-Brittain. I hope they find some comfort in today’s sentence.”
