Seven British Transport Police (BTP) officers dumped without warning after an independent misconduct panel exposed their WhatsApp group messages as grossly offensive and inappropriate.

Shock Dismissals After Offensive WhatsApp Chats

Five serving and two former BTP officers were axed without notice for sharing degrading, discriminatory, and offensive content in a WhatsApp group back in 2021. The misconduct panel’s ruling followed public hearings in London on 23 and 27 May, with some findings revealed earlier in February 2025.

The panel slammed the officers for seriously breaching sussex-police-officers-have-had-allegations-of-breaching-standards-of-professional-behaviour-proven-against-them-after-one-downloaded-pornography-whilst-on-duty-and-the-other-was-in-possess/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">professional standards.

Names of the Officers Cleaned Out

  • PC James Elliot
  • PC Michael 1
  • PC Steven Leung
  • PC Robert Whyte
  • PC Richard Wood
  • Former PC Lee Williamson
  • Former PC David Ford

The two former officers would have faced immediate sacking too, had they still been in the force.

What They Did to Warrant the Sack

  • Made fun of public suffering and injuries
  • Mocked violence against women and girls
  • Stereotyped and ridiculed protected groups
  • Joked about police criminality
  • Showed contempt towards the public they’re meant to protect

Strikingly, no one in the group challenged or reported these vile messages.

The Fallout and Official Response

BTP uncovered the chat in October 2023. The incident was passed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which allowed BTP to manage the case locally.

Besides the seven sacked officers, four supervisors caught up in the group received written warnings for failing to step in — though not guilty of gross misconduct.

Assistant Chief Constable Charlie Doyle blasted the behaviour as “shocking and offensive in almost every way possible.” He said:

“Those who sent these messages have shown complete contempt for the public, the office of constable, and the honest officers who serve with integrity. Holding a warrant card is a privilege. Anyone treating it like ‘banter’ has no place in policing.”

All involved were suspended as soon as the chat surfaced. The force promises to root out misconduct wherever it hides.

Why This Scandal Matters

This is one of the biggest mass dismissals in British Transport Police history. It exposes the dark side of policing culture and the dangers of digital platforms being misused to spread toxic and discriminatory content.

With public trust already fragile after several high-profile police scandals, this case sends a clear signal: gross misconduct will not be tolerated in UK forces.
