Ex-Convict, 84, Brutally Murdered Outside Newcastle Home

An 84-year-old convicted sex offender was savagely attacked and killed outside his home in Newcastle, County Down, in a chilling crime that police are racing to solve.

Body Found After ‘Brutal and Sustained’ Assault

The victim, Sean Small, was found dead near his property late Sunday night. He was last seen alive on Tuesday, August 19. Emergency crews were called around 1.30pm on Sunday, August 24, after reports of a man’s body in his 80s being discovered. Despite their efforts, Small was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody as detectives probe the attack.

Investigation in Full Swing

Detective Chief Inspector Kerrie Foreman, leading the case, said: “This was a brutal and sustained attack and while our investigation is at a very early stage, detectives are working at pace to determine the circumstances around this murder. Our thoughts are, first and foremost, with the family of the victim.”

Two properties have been sealed off as forensic teams comb the scene for clues. DCI Foreman would not disclose the exact cause of death or if others were involved. She did confirm police had responded to a criminal damage incident at Small’s home several weeks ago.

A post-mortem examination is underway.

Victim’s Dark Past Under Scrutiny

Sean Small had recently been released from prison after serving time for sex offences. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to sexual offences against a woman and a teenage girl.

DCI Foreman said: “We are pursuing all possible lines of inquiry at this time.”

Police Urge Public to Come Forward

Detectives are appealing to anyone who saw suspicious activity between August 19 and August 24 in the Newcastle area to get in touch.
