Sheffield Detectives Seek Public Information After Shots Fired at Officers

Detectives in Sheffield are calling on the public for information after shots were fired at officers responding to a concern for a woman’s safety. The incident unfolded shortly after 12:00am on January 4, when unarmed officers, attending an unrelated incident in Longley Hall Grove, encountered gunfire from a suspected air weapon.

Despite the alarming situation, no injuries were reported, and officers took cover promptly upon hearing the shots. Armed response units were swiftly deployed to the area, initiating an investigation to locate those responsible for the firearms discharge.

A 25-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton expressed concern over the incident, emphasising that officers should not face such risks when responding to incidents. He stated, “Being targeted in this manner is simply not part of the job of a police officer – it is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Door-to-door enquiries have been conducted, and additional patrols in the area aim to reassure residents. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.

DCI Oughton emphasised the importance of public cooperation, urging individuals to share any details or sightings related to the incident. “It’s so important you tell us anything you know or saw so that we can build up a full picture of what happened and bring those who carry guns to justice.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at 101, quoting incident number 385 of January 4, 2024. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously with independent charity Crimestoppers via freephone at 0800 555 111 or through the online form at http:///www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Confidentiality is assured, and individuals can remain 100 per cent anonymous.
