Care Worker Jailed for Life Over Teen Girl Lucy’s Rape and Murder
Stephen Nicholson, 25, has been locked up for at least 33 years for the horrific rape and murder of 13-year-old Lucy McHugh in Southampton. Along with the brutal killing, Nicholson was also found guilty of sexually assaulting another 14-year-old girl.
A Dark Past Unveiled
The court revealed Nicholson’s worrying history. At just 14, he received a two-year detention order for a string of crimes including false imprisonment, knife possession, theft, and aggravated vehicle taking. This troubled background hinted at the violent acts to come.
Defence Lawyer Speaks Out
James Newton-Price QC, defending Nicholson, acknowledged the heinous nature of the crimes. “These are extremely serious offences,” he said, “and my lady will impose an appropriate sentence.”
He admitted there were “relatively few” personal mitigating factors but said Nicholson’s difficult upbringing—being sent to a children’s home at 13 or 14—played a role. “He is still relatively young and will face a long time in custody,” he added.
Judge’s Verdict: Brutal and Unforgivable
Judge May described Lucy as “vulnerable” and “easy prey” to someone like Nicholson. She called the attack “particularly ferocious and brutal” and sentenced Nicholson to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 33 years behind bars.
The court heard moving details, including CCTV footage of Lucy walking past a shop on July 25—the last time she was seen alive. The judge praised the “groundbreaking” police use of technology to find key evidence, describing the investigation as “inspired” and commending the officers involved.
Justice has finally been served for Lucy, but the tragedy and the loss of such a young life cast a dark shadow over Southampton.
