Southwark Man Who Killed His Mum Given Hospital Order
A Southwark man has been handed a hospital order after fatally stabbing his own mother in a shocking 2018 attack.
Deadly Attack in Southwark Home
Edward Watkins, 55, of Ethnard Road, SE15, killed his 75-year-old mum Maureen Watkins at their home in Southwark back in November 2018. Police were called to the property at 4.04pm, where they found Maureen with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at 4.37pm.
Quick Arrest and Court Plea
Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command launched an immediate investigation and arrested Edward Watkins the same night. At the Central Criminal Court on Thursday, 9 May, Watkins pleaded guilty to manslaughter, citing diminished responsibility.
Hospital Order Handed Down
The court sentenced Watkins to a hospital order under sections 37/41 of the Mental Health Act, ensuring he receives treatment instead of jail time.
