Gang Guilty of Murder After Green Lanes Shooting
A brutal gang attack in Green Lanes, N8, left 22-year-old Sharmake Mohamud dead and two others injured on September 21, 2021. The five men involved have now been found guilty of murder and attempted murder following an Old Bailey trial.
Five Convicted Over Planned Hit
- Ali Ceesay, 29: Pleaded guilty on 21 February to murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
- Mehdi Younes, 22, Bowes Road, N11
- Abdul Mohamed, 26, Tottenhall Road, N13
- Two unnamed 17-year-old males (minors, identities protected)
All five await sentencing. Rasit Musa was acquitted, while a third 17-year-old remains without a verdict.
How the Attack Unfolded
The gang gathered in an alleyway over two miles from the murder scene to plan their deadly assault. Using stolen cars, they coordinated the attack meticulously.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley revealed:
“This was a planned attack. The group drove to Green Lanes in a stolen vehicle, targeting anyone from a rival gang. They may not have intended Sharmake specifically, but when they saw him, they zeroed in with lethal force.”
At around 10.30pm, Ali Ceesay and a 17-year-old jumped from the car and opened fire, shooting Sharmake at close range. Two bystanders were also caught in the crossfire.
The gang tried to destroy evidence by burning a stolen Jaguar car and disposing of gloves and mobile phones used during the attack.
Evidence and Arrests Lead to Convictions
- Forensic experts found DNA on clothes with gunshot residue and on gloves at the fire scene.
- CCTV captured the two teenagers attempting to burn gloves used in the attack.
- Mobile phones were confiscated to prevent linking shooters to the crime.
- Police seized a Ford Galaxy on false plates while transporting gang members.
- Ali Ceesay was arrested after returning from Gambia and failed to explain his DNA at the scene.
- Younes and Mohamed were arrested in November 2021.
DCI Jolley praised the exhaustive investigation:
“This meticulous probe used forensic evidence, phone data, and CCTV to pin down all five men’s involvement. While Ceesay fired the fatal shots, every member knew the deadly intent and played a part in the murder. The victim’s family has shown immense strength, and we hope these convictions provide some justice.”
