Rooftop Rumble: Man Jailed for 16 Weeks After Swindon Standoff

Rooftop Madness Sparks Chaos

A 29-year-old man caused havoc in Swindon after scaling the roof of a building in Newhall Street and refusing to come down for hours. Constantin Turcanu, homeless and with no fixed address, disrupted the town early on Sunday 25 May at around 8:20am. Emergency services mounted a huge response, cordoning off roads and negotiating with the man, throwing the area into turmoil.

Police Slam Public Nuisance

Turcanu appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance. He also breached a suspended sentence and a community order. As a result, he was handed a total of 16 weeks behind bars.

Local Crime Investigator Greenaway blasted the stunt: “Constantin Turcanu took up valuable police time as he put himself and the public in danger. Wasting police or other emergency services time — or misusing our services — is taken very seriously.”

Greenaway stressed the sentence sends a message about protecting emergency service resources and public safety.

Sentence Breakdown: 16 Weeks Locked Up

  • 8 weeks for causing a public nuisance
  • 12 weeks for breaching a suspended sentence (served concurrently)
  • 16 weeks for breaching a community order

All sentences run concurrently, resulting in a total custodial term of 16 weeks.

Community Disrupted, Authorities Praise Response

The incident was branded a “protracted and dangerous situation” by fire and police officials. Officers and emergency crews earned praise for their calm, professional handling amid widespread disruption.
