Teen Jailed for Fatal Punch That Killed 82-Year-Old at Derby Bus Station
Omar Moumeche, just 18, has been locked up for two years in a youth detention centre after being found guilty of manslaughter. The shocking attack happened at Derby bus station on May 6, 2021, when Moumeche landed a single, fatal blow to elderly Dennis Clarke, 82.
Victim Dies Days After Brutal Assault
Police were called to the scene around 4.30pm following reports of the violent attack. Mr Clarke was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but sadly died nine days later without ever regaining consciousness.
Confrontation Sparked by Escalator Row
During the trial, it emerged Mr Clarke had confronted three teens over their rowdy behaviour on an escalator at nearby Derbion Centre. The disagreement soon escalated, culminating in the deadly punch at the bus stop.
Investigation and Verdict
“Thanks to CCTV and witness statements, we could piece together the events clearly,” said Detective Inspector Mark Shaw, who led the probe. Moumeche claimed self-defence, but the jury saw through the story and convicted him.
Call for Peace and Reflection
DI Shaw spoke about the tragedy’s fallout for both the Clarke family and Moumeche. He urged people to think twice before resorting to violence. The grieving Clarke family showed “remarkable dignity” throughout, he added, hoping they can now cherish their memories and move on.
No charges have been brought against the two other teens initially arrested in connection with the case.
