Teen Jailed for 22 Years Over Fatal Islington Sword Attack

An 18-year-old teenager has been sentenced to 22 years behind bars for the brutal murder of 21-year-old Mohamed Abdi Noor in Islington.

Sanchez Tate, from Tufnell Park Road, was convicted at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 21 November, for the killing that took place on 11 December 2023.

Deadly Dispute Over Motorbike Turns Fatal

The tragedy unfolded on a cold December night when Mohamed discovered his motorbike had been knocked over near his home. A heated verbal argument erupted between him and Tate.

Tensions quickly boiled over. Tate pulled out a 43.5cm-long sword he’d been carrying and attacked Mohamed.

Police arrived at the scene on Tufnell Park Road at 7:27 PM to find Mohamed with multiple stab wounds. Despite frantic efforts to save him, Mohamed died in hospital in the early hours of 12 December.

Swift Arrest and Emotional Investigation

Tate was arrested the same evening at his nearby home. He was charged with murder and held in custody before his trial.

Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith said: “The dispute started as a verbal argument but tragically escalated to violence, driven by Tate’s terrible decision to carry and use a sword.”

He added, “My thoughts are with Mohamed’s family, who have lost a dearly loved son and friend. I would also like to thank the witnesses who bravely stepped in, called emergency services, gave first aid, and provided crucial evidence.”

Community Shocked, Calls to End Knife Crime

DCI Smith highlighted the tragic impact of the stabbing, reminding that Tate was just 17 at the time. He urged the community to reflect on the devastating consequences of carrying weapons.

Mohamed’s family has received support throughout the investigation and court process, describing him as a beloved son whose loss has left a huge void.

The Metropolitan Police have renewed their vow to tackle knife crime and pleaded with the public to report anyone carrying weapons or at risk.
