Teenager Jailed for Life Over Friend’s Fatal Stabbing in Newhaven

A teenage boy has been handed a life sentence after stabbing his friend to death in a bitter row in Newhaven.

Trent Hutchinson, 17, was convicted of murdering 18-year-old Colin “Ollie” Wells outside the home they shared on Elphick Road. The fatal attack happened just before midnight on January 6, after a heated argument.

Fight Turns Deadly at Friend’s House

The court heard that Ollie, who had been temporarily homeless, was staying at Hutchinson’s house, sleeping on a mattress in Trent’s bedroom with his mother’s blessing.

On the night in question, Ollie answered the door to some visitors, which sparked a confrontation. Hutchinson accused him of “bringing trouble to the house.” A violent fight broke out inside the home. Ollie was punched and fled outside, with Hutchinson following him out armed with a knife taken from the house.

Ollie was stabbed twice and collapsed in the street. Despite efforts by Hutchinson’s mother and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Judge Sends Teen to Prison for Minimum 14 Years

Hutchinson denied murder but was found guilty after a week-long trial at Hove Crown Court. He was sentenced on September 18 to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years. The judge lifted reporting restrictions, allowing Hutchinson’s name to be published.

Family and Police React to Tragic Loss

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme said: “This tragic moment has had a terrible impact on two families which will live with them forever. One young man lost his life, cruelly and savagely murdered by another young man who he believed to be his best friend.”

“Whatever the disagreement, we may never know why Hutchinson reacted with such extreme violence. His claim of self-defence was disproven by the severity of Ollie’s injuries.”

“Knife crime devastates communities. If you have information about knife carrying or violence, please come forward. Together we can stop more young lives being lost.”

Ollie Wells’ family paid tribute, saying: “Ollie’s death and the horrific way he died has devastated our family. He was the youngest sibling, full of smiles and cheekiness. Despite challenges with autism, he was well-liked and full of potential.”

“He loved horse-riding, sports, and music, and was a keen Chelsea football supporter. We hope today’s verdict brings some justice. Ollie will never be forgotten.”
