Mobile Signal Hits More Tube Stations – No More Dead Zones!

The Jubilee line’s tunnels between Westminster and Canning Town already boast full mobile coverage. Now, TfL has confirmed the first batch of stations to get the signal boost: Bank, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Euston, and Camden Town.

How TfL is Scrapping Dead Zones for Good

This upgrade comes thanks to a smart deal with BAI Communications. The company covers all installation costs—meaning no expense for TfL. Plus, TfL pockets revenue over the 20-year contract. Since signing up, BAI has turned the Jubilee line’s trial network into a permanent setup and is speeding up coverage across the whole London Underground.

Once these five stations light up, expect more Central line stops in the City and West End to follow by summer 2023. Plus, mobile signals will expand on the new Elizabeth line stretch between Paddington and Abbey Wood.

All Major Networks On Board

While all mobile providers are on the Jubilee line thanks to the trial, only Three and EE had signed for wider coverage. Now, Vodafone and O2 have jumped on board too, promising full support across remaining tube lines.

Also, Virgin Media’s station Wi-Fi will switch hands to BAI in April, who’ll run it for TfL—offering passengers even more connection options underground.

Fast, Reliable 4G Across the Tube by 2024

“I’m delighted that all four major mobile operators are set to provide high-speed, uninterrupted 4G coverage on the Tube,” said Shashi Verma, TfL’s Chief Technology Officer. “We are collaborating with BAI Communications to complete the next stations by the end of the year so that our customers can benefit as soon as possible.”

By the end of 2024, every Tube station and tunnel will have mobile coverage. This isn’t just about keeping you scrolling underground—BAI’s network will also host the Emergency Services Network (ESN), giving first responders instant access to life-saving data in emergencies.

£1 Billion Investment to Connect London

BAI is pumping over £1 billion into the Connected London programme. This will build a digital backbone of mobile coverage with full-fibre links to buildings and street assets like traffic lights and lampposts. These will carry tiny transmitter cells to boost 4G and 5G signals across the city.

Dead zones on the London Underground? Soon to be a thing of the past.
