Teen Found Guilty of Murdering Dad of Four Outside Home

James Gibbons, known as ‘Gibbo,’ was fatally stabbed four times outside his Laindon home on May 2. The 34-year-old was celebrating his twin daughters’ birthday when tragedy struck.

Knife Attack After Defending Another Man

The incident happened in Iris Mews at around 9:30pm. James had stepped in to protect a man being harassed by a gang of youths. But a 16-year-old boy, Joshuah Sparks from Armada Close, Laindon, pulled a knife and lashed out.

Sparks claimed he carried the knife for self-defence. The prosecution shot down this excuse at Chelmsford Crown Court, where after a five-week trial he was found guilty of murder. Sparks has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars and will remain on licence for life.

Family Speak Out: ‘Justice For James’

“We want to thank Essex Police for their quick action – without them, we wouldn’t have this justice,” said James’ partner, Vicky Billingham.

“No sentence can bring James back. My children now face a future without their dad. But I’m grateful the system worked. I can tell my kids that the man who hurt their daddy is locked up – and that’s what happens when you break the law.”

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe added:

“James’ family has seen justice served. Sparks showed no remorse for taking the life of a beloved dad, partner, son, and brother.”

“The brutal killing means James’ family will spend their first Christmas without him. My team worked tirelessly to catch him and secure this conviction.”

Teen’s Chilling Messages After Murder

In the hours following the stabbing, Sparks admitted the attack in a Snapchat group, chillingly stating: “I don’t care, I’m a psychopath” and “I might as well go and kill everyone else I don’t like.”

The teenager was arrested soon after. The court later lifted the ban on naming him, citing open justice.

Remembering James: A Loving Father and Protector

James was a hard-working family man who stood against bullies and looked out for the vulnerable. His family remember him as a devoted dad, a protective brother, and a loving partner to Vicky.

“James was a true hero to us all,” said the family. “He wanted nothing more than to provide for us and celebrate life with his children. That future was stolen from him.”

“We’ve launched Justice4JamesG on Facebook and Instagram to raise awareness about knife crime and support others affected.”

As the family begins their grieving, they remember James’ bravery and fight to keep his memory alive.
