Five Convicted After Teen Stabbed in Hackney Market Street Bloodbath

A terrifying knife attack at Broadway Market, Hackney left a 15-year-old teen seriously wounded and caused panic among dozens of onlookers. Five males have now been convicted following the shocking spree of violence, which saw eyewitnesses fear it was a terrorist attack.

Chaos Erupts at Busy Broadway Market

The violent incident unfolded at 11.23pm on Thursday, 30 July 2020, as crowds enjoyed a summer night out. Police were inundated with 22 emergency calls reporting a brutal knife fight. Officers arrived within four minutes to find the teenage victim with multiple stab wounds.

Despite a member of the public administering first aid, the teen was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The suspects fled the scene on bikes. Nearby, police recovered a large machete, sparking fears of gang-related violence.

Hackney Gangs Task Force Cracks the Case

Police launched a deep-dive investigation, with officers painstakingly analysing CCTV that showed the attackers hunting their victim beforehand. Their local knowledge helped them zero in on seven suspects.

Between August 2020 and May 2021, dawn raids led to multiple arrests including William Guy, Courtney Paul, Kyle Taylor, and three teenagers aged 15 to 17. Shocking evidence emerged: Paul had the same knife seen on CCTV, and a Snapchat group called “The real A-team” revealed chilling chats discussing the attack and their fear of being caught.

Self-Defence Claims and Courtroom Drama

In court, some attackers claimed self-defence. Paul, with a history of knife possession, insisted he found the weapon in the park. Guy admitted losing control but also claimed self-defence. Meanwhile, the victim was revealed to have been armed with a machete himself and considered a main aggressor.

Police Constable Cal Gregory said, “This was a horrifying incident for the victim and the public enjoying their evening. The CCTV shows the brutal reality of knife crime. The young ages involved are worrying. Tackling violence remains our top priority.”

Verdicts and Sentencing Ahead

  • Kyle Taylor, 26, pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, GBH with intent and violent disorder.
  • Courtney Paul, 24, pleaded guilty to carrying a knife but was found not guilty of attempted murder.
  • William Guy, 18, pleaded guilty to GBH with intent and violent disorder but was acquitted of attempted murder.
  • Two 17-year-olds found guilty of GBH with intent and violent disorder.
  • One 15-year-old cleared of all charges.

The convicted will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on 7 February 2022. The victim, who was also charged with violent disorder and possession of a weapon, pleaded guilty and was referred to the Hackney Youth Offender Panel.

This violent crackdown sends a clear message: knife crime and street violence won’t be tolerated in Hackney.
