Singapore Woman Caught with Gold Bars in Hand Luggage
In March 2020, a Singaporean woman was stopped at Heathrow Airport while transiting to Chennai, India. Border Force officers found gold bars hidden in her hand luggage. She claimed she was transporting the gold from one jeweller in Singapore to another in India but couldn’t explain her odd travel route.
Fake Invoices and Non-Existent Jeweller Raise Alarms
National Crime Agency (NCA) investigators seized the gold, suspecting it was linked to crime. They soon uncovered that the invoices she carried were fake and that the Chennai jeweller did not exist. Despite this, she was allowed to continue her journey while the NCA dug deeper.
NCA Wins Forfeiture After Two-Day Uxbridge Hearing
Following a two-day hearing at Uxbridge Magistrates on 26 January 2022, the NCA secured the forfeiture of the gold bars under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The case revealed a broader criminal money laundering network operating across Europe and Asia.
NCA Commander Highlights Criminal Use of Gold
“Gold is an attractive commodity for criminals to use to move money because relatively small amounts can have a high value,” said Andy Noyes, Branch Commander of the NCA. “We believe these bars were being moved through London to mask their true origin and avoid Indian law enforcement attention.”
“Working with partners like Border Force and Indian authorities, we disproved the woman’s story and disrupted the flow of illicit money through the UK.”
