Leeds Man Jailed for Raping Woman He Met on Dating Site

Chinmay Patel, 34, from Cardigan Road, Leeds, has been sentenced to nine years behind bars for raping a woman he met through a dating website.

Twice Attacked After Online Date

Patel was found guilty of two counts of rape at Southwark Crown Court on 14 May and sentenced on 24 June. The horrifying attacks happened in February 2017 after Patel met the victim on Shaadi.com.

The pair met in Bayswater, where the woman made it clear she didn’t kiss on first dates. They then went back to a flat in Westminster where she agreed Patel could stay overnight as he had a flight to pick up from Stansted Airport the next morning.

Instead, Patel raped her twice — once shortly after arriving and again the following morning.

Justice Served After Long Fight

The victim, in her 30s, bravely reported the attacks, attending a Haven support centre weeks later. Police launched their probe in March 2017.

Patel was arrested in April, initially bailed, then charged with two counts of rape in July 2020.

Detective Sergeant Vicky Pearce of the Met’s Sapphire unit said: “Patel’s actions were predatory and without control, and the effects of his actions will stay with the woman he attacked for many years to come.

“I hope that the significant sentence handed down encourages other victims of rape to come forward, and brings the rape survivor in this case a sense of closure and justice.”
