Prolific Airport and Railway Thief Jailed for Over Two Years

A notorious thief who targeted distracted travellers at Heathrow Airport, Paddington Train Station, and beyond has finally been locked up for two years and four months.

Wily Pickpocket Nabbed at Heathrow’s Central Bus Station

Kiberom Fikadu, 31, with no fixed address, was spotted by a sharp-eyed staff member at Heathrow’s Central Bus Station acting suspiciously on 10 January 2019. Police swooped after the tip-off.

PC Barry Munnelly from the Met’s Aviation Policing Command revealed Fikadu’s crafty methods. “He targeted people who were distracted—reading, chatting or eating—then helped himself to their valuables. His arrest is a stark reminder to travellers to always keep an eye on their belongings.”

Caught on CCTV in Bold Heathrow Theft

Police released CCTV showing Fikadu snatching a bag inside a Heathrow arrivals coffee shop on 3 January. The victim had left her bag on the seat beside her while eating. Fikadu cleverly covered it with his coat, slid the chair away, and then walked off with her belongings, including her passport and purse tucked under his jacket.

Crime Spree Uncovered Across London and Sussex

  • Fikadu was caught stealing a suitcase at Heathrow on 4 January.
  • He had two stolen passports, a lock knife, two laptops, and cannabis when arrested.
  • Investigation linked the laptops to thefts at Heathrow and Paddington stations.
  • He stole a wallet on a Sussex train, later dropping it at a Heathrow money exchange, where vigilant staff notified police.

Fikadu pleaded guilty to some charges but contested others. Eventually, he was convicted of multiple thefts, including passports and luggage, although a mobile phone charge was dropped.

Victory for Police and Travellers Alike

“Each of Fikadu’s thefts caused distress and disruption to the victims. I am pleased that we have been able to bring him to justice,” said PC Barry Munnelly after sentencing.

Travellers are urged to stay vigilant and guard their valuables. This case proves that airport and station criminals can be caught and punished.
