Cyber Scam Website Shut Down After Targeting 12,500 Victims

National Crime Agency (NCA) cybercrime cops have smashed a filthy online scam site, www.OTP.Agency, that duped thousands into handing over their bank details. The investigation kicked off in June 2020, after the site was found helping crooks steal one-time passcodes to bypass multi-factor authentication.

Criminals Used Site to Hijack Bank Accounts

The dodgy platform taught scammers how to sweet-talk victims into giving away genuine one-time passcodes and personal info. This let the criminals waltz into online banking accounts and nip off with cash through fraudulent transactions.

Officials estimate over 12,500 unsuspecting people were targeted from September 2019 until authorities cracked down in March 2021.

Three Young Men Arrested in Fraud Crackdown

On 24 March 2021, three men were arrested: Callum Picari, 21, of Hornchurch, Essex; Vijayasidhurshan Vijayanathan, 19, of Aylesbury, Bucks; and Aza Siddeeque, 18, of Milton Keynes" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Milton Keynes, Bucks.

Last month, they were charged with conspiracy to make and supply tools for fraud. Picari faces extra charges of money laundering and converting criminal property. They’re set to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 19 April.

NCA Warns Public and Fraudsters Alike

“This website was essentially a one-stop-shop which provided tools that made it easy for criminals to access bank accounts of members of the public and steal from them,” said Anna Smith, Operations Manager at the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit.

“Our investigation has protected the public from online fraudsters who used it for criminal and financial gain. This should serve as a warning to other people offering similar services. The NCA has the capability to disrupt and dismantle sites which pose a threat to people’s personal finances.”

“We urge anyone using online banking to be on high alert. Scammers might pretend to be a trusted company or contact you out of the blue. If anything feels fishy, like requests for personal information, always verify by contacting the company directly using official contact details.”
