Remembering Lee Rigby: A Fallen Soldier and Loving Dad

Today, Britain stops to honour Lee Rigby, the brave British Army soldier and devoted father murdered in a shocking terrorist attack in Woolwich in 2013. Lee was just 25 and served as a drummer with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Tragic Attack in Woolwich

On May 22, 2013, Lee was heading back to Woolwich barracks after duty at the Tower of London when extremists Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale brutally attacked him. Spotted crossing Wellington Street in his Help for Heroes hoodie, Lee was targeted, hit by their car, and viciously stabbed and slashed — nearly decapitated in a savage assault.

Adebolajo then made a chilling public spectacle, urging witnesses to film and call police, still covered in Lee’s blood. The attackers charged at armed officers in a bid for martyrdom before being shot and wounded. Adebolajo was handed a whole-life sentence, while Adebowale got a minimum of 45 years behind bars.

A Nation Pays Tribute

Yesterday, on the eve of the anniversary, Lee’s mother Lyn Rigby attended a Buckingham Palace garden party. King Charles III and Queen Camilla personally expressed their support to the Rigby family during this solemn time. Lyn and her husband Ian were among the honoured guests.

Lee’s Son Carries On His Legacy

Lee’s son Jack was only two and a half when his dad was killed. Last year, to mark the 10th anniversary, Jack set out to raise £10,000 for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity helping children with parents in the armed forces. Far surpassing his goal, Jack raised over £50,000 and was named Pride of Britain’s Young Fundraiser of the Year.

“People think because Jack was only two when his dad was killed, that it doesn’t affect him very much, but that’s not how it works,” said Jack’s mum, Rebecca. “Lee has always been such an important part of our lives and always will be. I’m so proud of Jack in everything that he does, and I think that Lee would be as well.”

As we mark the 11th anniversary of Lee Rigby’s tragic death, the nation stands united in solidarity with his family. His sacrifice and memory continue to inspire us all, a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact one person can make.
