Travellers Spark Fury on Richmond Village Green Ahead of Britain in Bloom
Richmond’s posh Ham Common has been invaded by around 14 noisy motorhomes and vehicles, sparking outrage among wealthy residents just weeks before the big Britain in Bloom competition.

The usually tranquil green, surrounded by homes worth over £1 million, is a magnet for celebs like The Who’s Pete Townshend, Amanda Holden, David Attenborough, and Tom Hardy. The area was even crowned London’s best village in 2017 – but travellers pitching their tents there has thrown the peace into chaos.
Locals Demand Immediate Action
Local MP Zac Goldsmith hit Twitter to voice his anger: “Ham Common has been taken over by travellers. Police and Council are on the case. Not the friendliest atmosphere.”
The Ham and Petersham Residents’ Association warned the travellers’ presence could damage the village’s chances of winning this year’s Britain in Bloom contest, which judges floral displays and outdoor beauty.
“We have encouraged police and council to act swiftly for eviction, but expect a drawn-out cat and mouse game before they leave, possibly not before the 1st of August,” the association posted. “We won’t let this ruin the hard work already done for judging on July 31. Please show your support and help.”
Police Frustrated but Persistent
Even the local bobbies sounded weary. A police officer tweeted from the Ham & Petersham account: “Here we go again, folks.” They urged residents to stay patient while working with the council to clear the 30-plus travellers.
With just weeks to go, Richmond’s posh village green faces a showdown that could put a spanner in the works of one of Britain’s most prestigious floral contests.
