Drugs, Neglect and Tragedy: The Death of Seven-Year-Old Hakeem Hussain
Seven-year-old Hakeem Hussain was found lifeless at a Birmingham home in November 2017. A grim court heard how his mother, Laura Heath, put her drug addiction before her son’s welfare, leading to his heartbreaking death.
Mother’s Addiction Blamed for Manslaughter
Laura Heath, 40, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence and admitted to four counts of child cruelty at Coventry Crown Court. Prosecutors revealed she prioritised heroin and crack cocaine over caring for Hakeem in the months before his death.
Heath’s addiction worsened dramatically, with her spending £55 a day on drugs, even funding her habit through sex work. Shocking evidence showed she turned one of Hakeem’s inhalers into a makeshift crack pipe.
Alone and Gasping for Air
On the night of Hakeem’s death, Heath smoked heroin before passing out in bed beside him. It’s believed Hakeem suffered a severe asthma attack, aggravated by second-hand smoke. Unable to wake his mother, the boy went outside for fresh air and was found dead clutching a leaf the next morning.
“All of that potential for a wonderful and fulfilling life was cut short, extinguished as he collapsed on his own suffocating, clutching a leaf in the garden,” said Mr Justice Dove.
“Hakeem died as a result of your deplorable negligence,” the judge added.
Warnings Ignored and Tragic Consequences
- Hakeem had struggled with asthma since age three.
- Authorities raised ongoing concerns about his medical care and safety.
- Two days before Hakeem died, a nurse warned he would die “by the weekend” if no action was taken.
- Health, education, and social workers planned intervention but it came too late.
A post-mortem confirmed uncontrolled asthma as the cause of death, with toxicology showing he inhaled tobacco smoke and had traces of heroin, crack cocaine, and cannabis in his system.
Defence QC Isabella Forshall argued Heath’s long-standing addiction, dating back to her teens, was a recognised mental condition. However, the court said this did not excuse her catastrophic failure as a mother.
Hakeem’s tragic death shines a harsh light on drug addiction and child neglect. A life full of promise was cruelly cut short – all while those around him failed to protect the vulnerable little boy.
