Brave Officers Tackle Armed Maniac in Shirehampton Streets

Two unnamed officers faced down a terrifying threat in Shirehampton last January. Called to deal with an aggressive man wielding an axe and a large knife, they faced a volatile, dangerous situation head-on.

Axe-Wielding Man Causes Havoc

The man, already violent after threatening a workmate with an axe and smashing windows at his own home, roamed the streets armed and hostile. When the officers arrived, he charged at them, axe swinging and knife in hand.

Despite the intense danger, the young cops stayed calm. They positioned themselves between the attacker and the growing crowd of onlookers to protect the public.

No Taser, No Problem – Officers Use PAVA Spray

Neither officer had Taser training at the time. One quickly deployed PAVA spray, managing to keep a safe distance from the swinging weapons. After a second dose, the spray took effect, slowing the attacker just enough for the officers to finally cuff him.

The man fought back fiercely, trying to bite and kick before being subdued. He was later sentenced to 22 months in prison for his violent rampage.

Outstanding Courage Praised by Police Federation

“They showed real courage in dealing with this violent man in what was an ever-evolving and fast-paced incident,” said Avon and Somerset Police Federation Chair Mark Loker. “They had to make quick decisions and manage the crowd. With no Taser training, they used their resources brilliantly to detain this volatile man. I dread to think what might have happened had they not acted as they did – they were both outstanding.”

The duo have now been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards, set to attend the ceremony in London this July alongside heroes from across England and Wales.
