Deadly Joyride Ends in Tragedy for Grandma, Drivers Jailed
Two reckless drivers were caught racing like maniacs before crashing into 84-year-old Shirley Hope’s car on December 20, 2019. Witnesses say Levi Edwards and Morgan Sansom were “driving like idiots” moments before Edwards lost control of his red BMW on Rhigos Road, Hirwaun, killing Mrs Hope instantly.
Hit-and-Run Horror: Sansom Flees Scene
While Mrs Hope lay dying, Sansom sped off in his white BMW. He briefly returned, then fled again before emergency teams arrived. Edwards was arrested immediately at the scene, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
“So I think I’ve come round the corner. I’ve slid, my wheel has hit the kerb. My back end has come out, and she’s hit me side on. I think my back end has come out first,” Edwards told police.
Sansom was nabbed at his home, charged with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop. He claimed: “I did turn around and come back.” But in chilling evidence, CCTV showed Sansom snapping a photo of the wreckage and posting it to Snapchat with the caption, “Bad crash,” while others tried to help Mrs Hope.
Jail for Killers: No Remorse Shown
Both Edwards, 27, and Sansom, 23, pleaded guilty months ago. Today, Edwards was locked up for six years, Sansom for six years and three months. Both face lengthy driving bans — Edwards for six years, Sansom for six years and one month.
Mrs Hope’s devastated family said: “The defendants have never shown any remorse for killing our mother. We thank South Wales Police for their tireless work in securing justice. We hope they will now reflect on their crimes behind bars.”
Police Pay Tribute to Victim’s Family
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Sergeant Lee Christer said:
“Levi Edwards and Morgan Sansom used the roads like a racetrack with zero regard for laws or others’ safety. Their recklessness cost a beloved grandmother her life and shattered many families.
“We carried out extensive CCTV and forensic work to expose their lies and prove the truth. The Covid-19 pandemic delayed justice, but today’s verdict brings some comfort to Mrs Hope’s family, who showed incredible strength throughout.”
