Two inmates charged with murder of Ian Watkins in HMP Wakefield stabbing

Shock Killing Behind Bars

Notorious paedophile and former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins was fatally stabbed inside maximum-security HMP Wakefield. West Yorkshire Police have charged two inmates, aged 25 and 43, with murder following the brutal attack on Saturday 11 October.

Watkins, 48, was found with a severe neck wound and died at the scene shortly after prisoners were unlocked for the day.

The Accused: Who Are They?

The men charged are Rashid Gedel, 25, who identifies as “any other black background,” and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, identifying as White British. Both remain in custody and will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.

Prison Predator No More: Watkins’ Dangerous Life Inside

Rather than being held apart, Watkins was housed with regular prisoners – killers, drug dealers, and gangsters. Sources say he repeatedly paid other inmates for protection, but it wasn’t enough to save him in the end.

“Watkins was known for paying for his security in jail. He was getting rinsed,” a source told The Sun. “Someone threatened him and demanded money, saying, ‘Give me cash and I’ll protect you.’ We don’t know why that person then turned on him and slit his neck.”

“He was getting no special protection. It put him in extreme danger. It was almost as if he knew his time was up.”

Dark History: Crimes and Prison Violence

Watkins was locked up in 2013 after being convicted of horrific child sex offences, including attempted rape and assault of children under 13, plus possession of indecent images. His sentence was lengthy and well deserved.

The former rocker had already faced dangers behind bars. In 2023, he was stabbed and reportedly once held hostage by other inmates, highlighting the brutal environment inside HMP Wakefield.

Police continue their murder investigation. The Prison Service has refused further comment due to the ongoing inquiry.
