Two Charged After Police Storm Southampton Hotspots with Stop-and-Search Blitz
Section 60 Powers Activated in Thornhill and Weston
Police swooped on the Thornhill and Weston areas of Southampton last night, using section 60 powers to stop and search 13 people following warnings of armed violence between rival groups. This emergency law allows officers to search anyone in a targeted zone when serious violence is suspected or recently occurred.
Two Men Arrested and Charged
- Samuel Richard Stewart, 25 – charged with possession of an offensive weapon, no fixed address.
- Andrew Philip Watson, 31 – charged with carrying a bladed item in a public place, from Hazel Road, Southampton.
The section 60 order was in force from 8pm Tuesday (January 21) until 8am Wednesday (January 22). It comes amid rising community concerns over violent disputes between gangs suspected of wielding weapons.
Not Southampton’s First Stop-and-Search Push
This isn’t the first time section 60 has been used in the area. Last September, similar powers were implemented after threats of violent disorder surfaced. Police say the ongoing tension links back to the recent tragic death of a child, James Laurie.
Police Say “We’re Listening”
Spokespeople insist they are acting swiftly to prevent violence escalating. “Publicising these operations shows the community we’re listening and taking action,” they said. Since the death of James Laurie, a boy has been charged with his murder, and authorities urge the public to allow the legal process to unfold.
Feedback from locals has been mostly positive, with police thanking the community for their support. They urge residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour – “You are our eyes and ears out there.”
Officials are reviewing the possibility of extending or renewing the section 60 order and will update the public accordingly.
