Heroin smugglers caught red-handed with £5,000 worth of drugs hidden inside their bodies
Secret stashes inside drug mules found by police
Daniel Liam Meyler, 42, and Patrick Byrne, 49, both from Maes y Deri, Cardigan, were busted in October 2021 carrying over £5,000 worth of heroin concealed inside their bodies. Officers found 11 packages of the Class A drug when stopping the pair.
Repeated trips expose drug-running route
Dyfed-Powys Police suspected the duo were regularly ferrying heroin from Newport back to Ceredigion. Surveillance revealed Meyler’s car made the cross-country journey at least 10 times between August and mid-October 2021.
Denials fail as evidence stacks up
The men claimed the heroin was for personal use, but a drugs expert dismissed this, confirming the haul was far too large for just themselves. They were arrested and charged with possessing heroin with intent to supply.
Sentences handed down after trial
Meyler pled not guilty but was convicted after a three-day trial and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. Byrne admitted the offence and received a three year, nine month prison term.
“These men knew the devastation heroin causes yet still chose to supply it locally,” said PC Sam Garside. “Their efforts to hide the drugs failed. Thanks to tireless police work, this supply line has been shut down. We’re warning other dealers – we’re watching, and we will catch you.”
