US Woman Charged with Conspiracy to Murder in Birmingham Shoot Plot
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has given the green light for West Midlands Police to charge Aimee Betro, a US citizen from Wisconsin, with conspiracy to murder and other offences linked to an attempted shooting in Birmingham.
Serious Charges Over Failed Birmingham Hit
- Conspiracy to Murder: Betro stands accused, along with co-defendants Mohammed Nazir and Mohammed Aslam, of plotting to murder a Birmingham clothing store owner and his family between 21 August and 10 September 2019.
- Possession of Firearm with Intent: She allegedly possessed a firearm on 8 September 2019 intending to cause fear of violence.
- Illegal Importation of Ammunition: Betro is also charged with knowingly evading restrictions on ammunition importation from 12 September to 23 October 2019.
International Manhunt and Extradition
Betro was tracked down in Armenia after an international arrest warrant was issued on 18 June 2024. She was detained by Armenian authorities on 2 July and appeared in court there on 4 July before being extradited to the UK.
Ben Samples, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for West Midlands, said: “CPS West Midlands worked closely with West Midlands Police, Derbyshire Police, Armenian authorities, and the Extradition Unit to bring Ms. Betro to the UK to face charges.”
Upcoming Court Appearance
Ms. Betro is due at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 17 January. The CPS has cautioned the public to respect her right to a fair trial and warned against prejudicial media or online commentary.
Justice Knows No Borders
This case underlines the growing global cooperation to tackle serious crime and hold suspects accountable, no matter where they are. The CPS stressed that charging Betro is based on evidence set to be tested in court, with no presumption of guilt.
