West Midlands Plumber Jailed for Dangerous, Illegal Gas Work
A self-employed plumber from the West Midlands has been locked up after carrying out illegal and unsafe gas work. Daniel Kelly Mountain worked on gas boilers in 2020 and 2021 without being registered with the Gas Safe Register — the law’s must-have for gas engineers. He even falsely claimed to be Gas Safe Registered to drum up business.
Unsafe Work Puts Lives at Risk
Gas Safe inspectors found Mountain’s work to be downright dangerous, describing it as a risk of immediate harm to occupants. The dodgy tinkering on boilers could have led to serious injuries or worse.
Repeat Offender Ignored Warnings
This isn’t Mountain’s first brush with the law. Back in 2016, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) banned him from doing any gas work until he properly registered. Mountain flouted the ban and kept working unlawfully across homes in the West Midlands.
12 Months Behind Bars for Rogue Plumber
At Wolverhampton Crown Court on October 6, Mountain, formerly of Wellington Court, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to multiple breaches of gas safety laws and the Health and Safety at Work Act. The judge responded with a 12-month jail sentence.
“All gas work must be done by a registered Gas Safe engineer to ensure the highest standards are met to prevent injury and loss of life. Please let this be a warning to other rogue gas fitters,” warned HSE inspector Marie-Louise Riley-Roberts.
