West Yorkshire cop found guilty of rape and sexual assault committed before joining the force
A West Yorkshire Police officer has been convicted of raping a woman and sexually assaulting her while still a student officer, authorities have confirmed.
PC Benjamin Bottomley, formerly attached to the Kirklees policing district, was suspended in June 2023 after the victim bravely reported the offences.
At Sheffield Crown Court, Bottomley was found guilty of:
- Rape of a woman
- Sexual assault against the same woman during his time as a student officer
Police Crack Down After Shocking Conviction
A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:
“As soon as the allegations were reported, PC Bottomley was immediately suspended, and an investigation was launched. We recognise the courage of the victim in coming forward to report these serious offences.”
The force stressed that Bottomley’s actions are “completely at odds” with police values and announced fast-track misconduct proceedings following his conviction.
Assistant Chief Constable Catherine Hankinson slammed Bottomley’s behaviour, saying:
“This individual’s actions betray the public trust placed in our officers. We are determined to root out anyone who does not uphold the highest standards of behaviour. There is absolutely no place for individuals like this in policing.”
Misconduct Proceedings and Future Action
West Yorkshire Police will fast-track misconduct hearings with a view to dismissing Bottomley from the force. The case has also been handed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Wider Police Scrutiny Amid Rising Public Concern
Bottomley’s conviction comes amid nationwide alarm over police misconduct, especially regarding crimes against women and girls. UK police forces have vowed to tighten vetting and boost transparency to regain public trust.
Bottomley remains in custody pending sentencing, with the date expected to be set soon.
