Ex-PC Caught Out for Sexism and Lying About Afghanistan Tour

Former probationary officer Matthew Lawrence-Stearn has been blasted for a catalogue of inappropriate behaviour during his police training from August to November 2021.

His misconduct included sexualised comments and behaviour aimed at female colleagues, sparking serious concerns within Essex Police ranks.

Fabricated Military Service Exposed

Lawrence-Stearn didn’t just misbehave—he also lied about serving in Afghanistan. He claimed to have been deployed in Kabul as part of the armed forces.

In reality, he joined the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadron but bailed after just 35 days without completing training or seeing active duty.

Essex Police Misconduct Hearing Slams Former Probationer

The scandal was exposed at an Essex Police misconduct hearing held over Microsoft Teams from 13-14 March. The panel, led by Independent Chair Monica Daley-Campbell, ruled all allegations proved.

Had he still been in service, Lawrence-Stearn would have faced immediate dismissal.

Deputy Chief Constable Andy Prophet said: “We expect the highest standards of professional behaviour from all officers and staff and take a robust approach in dealing with any allegation of poor conduct.

“Former PC Matthew Lawrence-Stearn’s behaviour fell well below the standards we expect.

“Essex Police is committed to tackling all forms of violence, intimidation and inappropriate behaviour against women and girls and the former officer’s behaviour was utterly unacceptable.”

“His dishonesty made matters worse. We do not want people who display this kind of behaviour. He was a student probationer who never made it to policing our communities.

“I want to thank those who reported his inappropriate behaviour for their integrity and professionalism.

“We encourage anyone to report something that’s not right as fast as possible. It’s really important they do so.

“I want officers and staff to have the confidence to report things and have an anonymous system for doing so.”
