Twitter Chaos: High-Profile Accounts Hacked in Massive Crypto Scam
Twitter was hit by a brazen cyber attack on Wednesday as hackers simultaneously took over several high-profile accounts to push a slick cryptocurrency scam. The culprits targeted big names with millions of followers, including @bitcoin, @ripple, @coindesk, @coinbase, and @binance.
Massive Twitter Hack Spreads Fake Bitcoin Giveaway
The hacked accounts all blasted out the same message: “We have partnered with CryptoForHealth and are giving back 5000 BTC to the community,” followed by a suspicious website link (which we’re not sharing).
The scam site was quickly shut down. Kristaps Ronka, CEO of domain registrar Namesilo, confirmed the domain was suspended “on the first report” as soon as they learned about it.
Big Names Targeted: Musk, Bezos, Biden, Gates Hit
- @elonmusk’s account pushed the classic “send bitcoin and I’ll double it” fraud line — a well-known crypto con.
- @apple, Amazon founder @jeffbezos, Democratic candidate @joebiden, and @billgates were also hit with the same scam tweet before deleting it.
Cryptocurrency Wallet Already Raking In Thousands
These crypto scams aren’t new, but they still snare victims. Hackers hijack famous accounts, then post messages urging followers to send cryptocurrency with promises to “double” their money. In reality, it’s just theft.
By midday, the scam wallet had already gathered 2.8 bitcoin — about £20,000 — and the total was climbing fast.
Investigation Underway, Twitter Remains Tight-Lipped
Binance confirmed its security team is “actively investigating this coordinated attack on the crypto industry.” Other affected parties have yet to comment.
Security experts say hackers gained full control of the accounts and even changed associated email addresses, making it tougher for real owners to reclaim them.
Twitter has yet to provide details but said it is “looking into” the situation. The platform is known to shut down compromised accounts quickly — but this attack showed just how vulnerable social media giants still are.
