Crackdown at Castle Retail Park After Surge in Shoplifting
Residents and businesses at Radford’s Castle Retail Park are fed up with rising crime. Shoplifting has soared, making up around 10% of the force’s total crime figures. Some shops are even forced to close due to repeated thefts.
Heavy Police Presence Targets Persistent Offenders
On 13 May, officers launched a major day of action at Castle Retail Park, with more planned across the city. Both uniformed and plain-clothed officers took part, staking out main entrances and lurking inside stores disguised in jeans and hoodies.
Police swiftly spotted a man fresh out of prison, wanted for multiple shop thefts, loitering near the park. They are armed with mugshots of 25 prolific offenders and ready to slap on Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs). These bans stop troublemakers from returning for up to three years if they keep offending.
New Shop Watch Scheme to Boost Security
A new shop watch scheme is launching soon, aiming to tighten ties between businesses and police. This joint effort hopes to send a clear message: Castle Retail Park is no playground for criminals or beggars pestering shoppers.
“We want Castle Retail Park to be a place where people can visit without being pestered for change outside stores or feel unsafe,” said a police spokesperson.
“We are working closely with staff and security, hoping these actions make offenders realise they can’t commit crime here without consequences.”
“These are excellent businesses, a massive benefit to the city. Staff deserve protection from abuse or assault by known offenders.”
“We’re listening to the community and taking positive steps to restore confidence.”
With shoplifting still rampant from January to May, the crackdown couldn’t come sooner. Police vow to keep pressing until Castle Retail Park is safe again for shoppers and staff alike.
