Two Arrested After Clashes at Tommy Robinson Rally in London

Chaos erupted at a London rally led by right-wing firebrand Tommy Robinson after two men were arrested for allegedly assaulting an anti-racism protester. The scuffle broke out amid huge demonstrations and counter-protests in central London, where former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also took to the stage.

Heavy Police Presence Amid Tense Standoff

The Metropolitan Police deployed around 1,000 officers to keep a lid on the volatile situation as thousands marched for and against Robinson’s event on Saturday. The duo were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after reportedly attacking a member of the Stand Up To Racism group, who were holding a counter-demonstration.

Patriotic Slogans and Clashing Views at Trafalgar Square

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, kicked off the rally at the Royal Courts of Justice before moving on to Trafalgar Square. Supporters waved flags and chanted patriotic slogans, with Robinson hailing it as “the biggest patriotic rally the UK has ever seen.” Meanwhile, anti-racism campaigners from Stand Up To Racism and the Peace & Justice Project, backed by the TUC and other groups, shouted back with calls for peace and anti-racism messages on placards.

Violence at Victoria Embankment Gardens

The violence flared at Victoria Embankment Gardens, where the assaulted protester suffered a head injury. Police officers on the scene administered first aid before the victim was taken to hospital for further checks.

Police Vow Tough Action

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, leading the police operation, promised a firm response to any breaches of the peace. He stressed that the arrests were strictly related to the assault and not to flag-waving or other peaceful protest activities, dismissing social media speculation.

Clashes Amid a Busy Protest Day

The rally coincided with a Trans Pride march in London, adding to the day’s intensity, though no specific restrictions were imposed on the Pride event. Police maintained a delicate balance, keen to protect lawful demonstrations while stamping out violence.
