London Steps Up Covid Fight as Alert Level Hits ‘High’
London’s coronavirus restrictions are tightening from 12.01am this Saturday, 17 October, as the city moves from a “medium” to “high” alert level. New rules hit all 32 boroughs hard.
New Rules: No Indoor Meets, Outdoor Limits Tightened
- No indoor meetings with anyone outside your household or support bubble—whether at home or public spots.
- Outdoor gatherings capped at six people, including gardens and parks.
- Cut down on travel where possible. If you must go out, walk or cycle, avoid rush hours, and steer clear of busy public transport routes.
Police Cracking Down on Rule-Breakers Near Pubs and Bars
The Met will boost patrols, particularly in the evenings around bars and pubs—hotspots for rule flouters. They’ll use their ‘4 Es’ strategy: engage, explain, encourage, and enforce only as a last resort.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist warned: “We have seen some reckless breaches, and as the alert escalates, so will our policing. We won’t hesitate to act against individuals or businesses risking others’ safety.”
Londoners Urged to Play Their Part and Report Serious Breaches
Twist added: “This is a critical moment. Most Londoners will do the right thing to protect themselves and loved ones. Please report serious breaches via 101 or online, though bear in mind some situations may have exemptions.”
Now more than ever, Londoners must stick to the rules to keep the virus at bay and safeguard the city’s vulnerable communities.
